Chasing the Sublime
After reading Immanuel Kant’s writings concerning the beautiful and sublime, I began to experience and grapple with a hyperawareness of my own inadequacy and incarnate fragility. According to Kant, the sublime is both wonderous and painful – a deep longing for something we can never attain or achieve. He wrote that whatever lay beyond this limited range of our frustrated minds was good – was God. Chasing these paintings shaped opportunities for me to encounter that realization of human and personal deficiency, and through that, find hope in the redemption that lies beyond.
